- Accented first beat, plus eighths, triplets and sixteenths
- Sample-accurate timing that doesn’t drift
How to use the metronome
- Set the tempo: drag the slider, press − and +, type a number, or tap Tap tempo in time with the music a few times.
- Choose the beats per bar: 4 for most pop and rock, 3 for a waltz, 6 for 6/8. The first beat of each bar gets a higher click.
- For tricky rhythms, add clicks per beat: 2 for eighth notes, 3 for triplets, 4 for sixteenth notes.
- Press Start, or the Space bar. The tempo can be changed while it plays.
Tempo markings
Sheet music often gives the tempo as an Italian word rather than a number. These are the usual ranges; sources differ by a few BPM.
| Marking | BPM | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Grave | 30–39 | Very slow and solemn |
| Largo | 40–59 | Broadly, slow |
| Larghetto | 60–65 | Rather slow |
| Adagio | 66–75 | Slow and at ease |
| Andante | 76–107 | At a walking pace |
| Moderato | 108–119 | Moderate |
| Allegro | 120–155 | Fast and bright |
| Vivace | 156–175 | Lively and fast |
| Presto | 176–199 | Very fast |
| Prestissimo | 200+ | As fast as possible |
How to practise with a metronome
- Start at a tempo where you can play the passage cleanly every time — usually slower than you think.
- Raise the tempo by 4–5 BPM once it feels easy, and drop back down if mistakes creep in.
- Use clicks per beat to check eighth notes and triplets: every note should land exactly with a click.
- Set 1 beat per bar for a plain click, or count the bar yourself to build an inner sense of time.
Frequently asked questions
What BPM should I practise at?
Slow enough to play without mistakes. For a new piece that is often half the final tempo; speed up in small steps once it is easy.
How does tap tempo work?
Tap the Tap tempo button in time with a song at least twice. The metronome averages your last few taps and sets that BPM; pause for two seconds to start a new count.
Why can’t I hear the click on my iPhone?
Check that the ringer switch is not on silent and the volume is up: on iPhone, web audio is muted when the phone is on silent.
Does it keep time if I switch to another app?
It keeps playing while the page stays open, and the screen stays awake while the metronome runs. If you need to tune too, the guitar tuner is one tap away.
