Ukulele Tuner
The tuner listens through your microphone.
Tune your ukulele with your phone or computer’s microphone. Play a string and the tuner shows the note and how far off it is — for soprano, concert and tenor ukuleles.
- Standard G C E A tuning, low G and chromatic mode
- Hears a ukulele clearly through the built-in microphone
- Reference notes to tune by ear
Standard ukulele tuning: G C E A
From the string at the top as you hold the ukulele (the 4th) to the one at the bottom (the 1st), these are the notes and frequencies the tuner aims for:
| String | Note | Frequency |
|---|---|---|
| 4th (top) | G4 | 392.00 Hz |
| 3rd | C4 | 261.63 Hz |
| 2nd | E4 | 329.63 Hz |
| 1st (bottom) | A4 | 440.00 Hz |
Tune by ear: play the notes
Tap a note to hear it, then tune the string until it sounds the same.
How to tune a ukulele
- Press Start tuning and allow microphone access. The tuner starts in standard ukulele tuning.
- Pluck the 4th string (G, at the top) and let it ring. Needle left means flat — tighten the string; needle right means sharp — loosen it.
- When the display turns green, tune the C, E and A strings the same way.
- Go around once more: ukulele strings stretch a lot, and tuning one changes the others slightly.
Why is the G string higher than the C?
Standard ukulele tuning is re-entrant: the 4th string is tuned to the G above middle C rather than below it, so the notes go G4, C4, E4, A4. The C string is the lowest. This gives the ukulele its bright, close-voiced strum and lets melodies jump between strings easily. If the tuner tells you your G is an octave too low, you probably have a low G string.
Low G tuning
Some players replace the high G with a thicker string tuned an octave lower, G3. The notes and chord shapes stay the same, but the ukulele gains a bass note. Choose low G under Tunings to tune it.
Baritone ukulele
A baritone ukulele is tuned D G B E — the same as the four highest strings of a guitar. Use Chromatic mode, or choose Standard guitar tuning: its 4th to 1st strings are exactly D3 G3 B3 E4.
Why new ukulele strings keep going flat
Nylon and fluorocarbon ukulele strings stretch for the first week or so. Tune up, gently pull each string away from the fretboard along its length, and tune again; after a few days of this they hold their pitch much better.
Frequently asked questions
Can I tune a ukulele with my phone?
Yes. Open this page in your phone’s browser, press Start tuning and allow microphone access. Hold the phone near the soundhole and play one string at a time.
What are the notes of a ukulele?
G C E A, from the string at the top (4th) to the bottom (1st). A popular way to remember them is “Good Cats Eat Alligators”, or the start of the song “My Dog Has Fleas”.
Does it work for soprano, concert and tenor ukuleles?
Yes. All three sizes use the same G C E A tuning, so the tuner works the same way for each.
Can I tune a baritone ukulele?
Yes. A baritone is tuned D G B E: use Chromatic mode, or Standard guitar tuning, whose four highest strings are the same notes.
